My wife and I came to this restaurant expecting something different. We both love Louisiana creole style food and figure this would be the place that would best represent. There's not many restaurants of its kind in the greater Montreal area so we gave it a shot.
I ordered jambalaya ($18) and my wife ordered the dinosaur ribs ($28). We also had a crab cake appetizer ($11).
The service was slow to begin with however the single waitress had her hands full and she did do a good job. The servers however were annoying, constantly cleaning our table that didn't need cleaning and taking away our plates without asking us. We had sweet potato fries remaining and he just took them away assuming we were done. He went so fast I didn't even have a chance to tell him.
As for the food. The crab cake app was good however way overpriced. It was 5 very small meatball size crab cake balls on a plate for $11?!
When our mains came I was a bit disappointed. My jambalaya was not really a jambalaya. Usually they are served in a bowl and just a mixed mess. They decided to separate everything neatly which made it look like a completely different dish. I had to ask the waitress if my plate was in fact what I ordered. Aside from that, the chicken was incredibly dry, I barely tasted any andouille sausage and the overall taste was not that of a jambalaya.
The dinosaur ribs my wife ordered consisted of 5 big bones with a bit of meat stuck on them. Honestly it looks impressive until you start seeing how little meat there is on these monster sized bones. The flavor was there but nothing special. For $28 you would expect more and not leave hungry.
My overall impression of this place was disappointing and I find the prices a rip off for what you get.
I've been to this restaurant twice and have mixed feelings. The first time I went with my brother and we both had excellent meals. Very flavourful, fresh ingredients, and the service was attentive and polite.
The second time I went with a friend after I raved to her how good it was, but it was completely disappointing. My pasta was overcooked and mushy, and the food she ordered was nothing like the description on the menu (and definitely not as spicy as the waiter made it seem...actually it was quite bland). The service was slow, and it was pretty much impossible to get the waiter's attention.
Not sure if I'd give this place another chance or not. Based on the other reviews it seems "hit or miss", and for the price I'm not sure I'd want to risk it.
For appetizers, I had the crab cakes they were delicious. Also tried the Louisiana Alligator (like little nuggets) not bad but not as good as the crab cakes.
I had the crawfish étoufée, pretty spicy, it wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad. I'm told that's not how a real louisiana étoufée is made, usually it's rice, veggies and the crawfish tails mixed together with a cream sauce, this was everything separated and the sauce was more sticky.
The service wasn't very good. The waitress seemed annoyed that we were there. Despite being about the only people inside the restaurant, the bus boys would always pass right beside our table, for the short time we were there they passed right beside our table like 15 times. A waiter came and took away my plate while I was still chewing on food. Then as we were waiting for the bill, a guy came with his cloth and started wipping and fixing the table for the next customers... he couldn't wait 5 more minutes?
Went here for Valentine's Day. I had the Cajun combo and have to agree with another reviewer's comments about the chicken being dry, the tomatoes/sauce quite acidic and the rice though nicely seasoned was pasty. I had some sort of fruity cocktail that was tasty and went down really easy. Bf had some sort of beef thing and was quite pleased with it. I found the cornbread and hushpuppies dry; we tried the alligator and was good. Chocolate mousse for dessert, was delicious. It was very noisey and packed- The restaurant isn't very spacious. Was recommended to go there, but not sure we'll return.
CRAB CAKE CRAB CAKE CRAB CAKE!
I went with high expectations after having been told by my brother that it was a great restaurant. My boyfriend and I were not disappointed! The food was fantastic. I'm surprised to read the negative comments about this restaurant because I was very happy with the food. I love spicy food and was happy that the food had that kick that I was looking for. I would definitely go back again and again!
At night La Louisiane is a cozy restaurant with nice lighting and a great view of the open kitchen. It's unfortunate that the food did meet my expectations.
As my first visit to La Louisiane, I chose the Cajun Combo, a menu item that's supposed to offer a sampling of the Louisiane cookbook, with Jambalaya Rice, Shrimp Creole and Chicken Etouffee. The meal was disappointing. The chicken was dry and accompanied by a less than spectacular sauce. The Jambalaya rice had a good amount of spice for me, but was pasty and cold. The actual Shrimp served with the creole were terrific, tasty and perfectly cooked, but the tomatoes used for the creole were not enjoyable, they tasted acidic and were not eaten.
Corn bread and bread accompanied the meal, which were fresh and tasty. However, if you want cornbread, you're better off at the nearby Mesquite restaurant, whose version is better.
Service was borderline acceptable.
Having grown up in Louisiana, I came in with high expectations and wasn't disappointed!! The crab cakes and jambalaya were 'slap-yo-mamma" hot!!!
So disappointing...my husband & I visited this restaurant despite some of the negative reviews on this site. We thought we would give them the benefit of the doubt...oh, what a mistake!
First, the "crab cakes" were nothing more than burnt little falafel looking things, that were deep-fried to a deep black. The Chicken Etouffee was a plain old chicken breast smothered in a bad attempt at a spicy sauce (basically just a bunch of powders dumped together). The dinosaur beef ribs were charred BLACK, and barely editable. The "salad" was your basic bagged salad mix slathered in oil.
It's too bad since it looks like a nice atmosphere (all candle-lit and cozy), and the servers and bartender were all very friendly & attentive. Excellent service, sub-par food. Sorry, we'll listen next time :(
We started with an order of hushpuppies, which were overcooked (bordering on burnt). They were way too large and dense.
My husband's crab cakes were coated in the same batter as the hushpuppies and were also nearly burnt. They resembled overly-thick hockey pucks on the plate.
My chicken etouffee wasn't bad, but I probably wouldn't order it again.
I had such high hopes for this restaurant based on the other reviews! It was crowded and the other diners seemed to be enjoying themselves, so maybe our experience was a fluke...
EXCELLENT.....JUST A LITTLE TOO HOT FOR ME!!!!
I WILL DEFINATELY BE BACK GREAT AMBIANCE
