I went to this restaurant with very high expectations after reading its reviews on restomontreal. I do agree with the quality of the food, I had filet mignon and my husband had the duck confit and we were both quite satisfied.
We were seated in a very small room, about 5 tables fit in there, I think there were private parties in the other rooms, this made us feel like we were in someone's out-dated dining room.
The problem we had lay with the service, everyone here seemed to have been served by "Lino", unfortunately he was not our waiter on this night. Our waiter, who barely spoke english, seemed very uncomfortable and insecure with his job, which in the end, made us uncomfortable.
We could barely understand him because he spoke in such a low tone, her was just so shy! We placed our orders in english, to which he responded in english, but throughout the evening, he kept going back to french and back to english in the same sentence! Whenever he came to check on us he seemed almost afraid to speak, because he just seemed so nervous. Once we finished our dinner, he came right away and completely cleared out table of EVERYTHING and then left, he did not bother offering any desserts or coffee. He then went on to serve other tables. He finally realized after about 10 minutes that we were waiting (for anything at this point) and came back to offer desserts. We asked what they were and all he mentioned were flavours; it was not clear if these were cakes, tarts, ice cream...etc. We did not end up taking any of them as we were disappointed in the service and just wanted to leave.
When the time came to pay, he brought me the portable credit card machine; at one point I was uncertain which button to press when it came to the tip so I asked him how it worked, which he explained to me but then, stood right over me watching what tip I was going to put in! I did not like that at all. Needless to say he did not get his full 15%.
It's too bad because the food here is good, but because of that service, we will not be going back there.
Excellent Cuisine........... BRAVO !!!!!
Just would like to say that is was fantastic as usual. I definitively would recommend it to all. The food was fantastic, the service was great, fantastic ambiance, and the price was also reasonable. Easy to get to and lots of parking.
A Big Thank you to Lino.
Over the years I've tried many so-called "Italian" restaurants which most are " not " owned and operated by Italians and they just don't measure up with their watered down and sugery tomato sauces and mushy pasta. You want to try real Italian cuisine ? try Restaurant Gualdieri, believe me you won't regret it. It may not be located near the big hotels or the shopping districts but the less than 10 minute drive from Laval's downtown area is well worth it, believe me, for a fine dining experience this is the place. To give you an idea of it's location, it is but a few blocks from Laval's hospital, and it's accessible by the 440 hwy.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they make their own bread ( delicious ) and also make their own sausages , italian cold cuts like prosciutto, sopressate ( salami ), cappicolli, they do smoked trout or smoked salmon , and even gravlax. On the menu you have a wide variety ranging from pasta dishes to veal chops, osso bucco, angus beef steaks, duck and plenty more and yes even pizza, and everything is absolutely delicious. They also make the most incredible " to die for " deserts ". They have this incredible wine list and if you don't know what to pick maybe the house " sommelier " can help you with chosing the right wine for your meal and won't necessarely suggest the highest priced wine either.
For those of you who are interested, I was told that they are equipped for conferences and you can reserve for a small gathering up to a room for a big party. The staff is polite, friendly and very much of service.
The prices are excellent, from a small budget up to ++ , the table d'hôte offers a wide variety at different price levels and includes the appetizer down to coffee and desert.
Loved this place so much that I've suggested this restaurant to my family and that's where will celebrate my parents 50th anniversary, yessss !
Really, if I could I would eat there every day, now That's Amore !!!
I had the most wonderful time at this restaurant over the weekend. I was invited to celebrate the 25 fifth wedding anniversary of a dear friend. Although our group was quite large I found the serving staff to be very attentive and knowledgeable. The food was delicious! I personally always judge a restaurant by the quality of its bread. I was not disappointed as soon as I sat down at the table a basket of fragrant bread rolls was served. We were off to a great start. Then the antipasto arrived, boy what a treat the calamari were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, Yum! We then had a nice salad (its hard for me to get excited about lettuce ;(. Followed by the main which was Osso Bocco, Ok folks this dish was a winner! Plus I got to eat more of the bread with the sauce. When we finally got to the dessert, I never thought I would be able to eat another bite but when I saw the beautiful crème brulée arrive, I discreetly unbuttoned the top of my pants and dug in. I swear I heard angels singing! Although it might have been the wine the point is it was so..so.. good. Guess where Ill be this weekend?
