Very good group dinner at this byow. We got multiple appetizers, 5 curries & orders of rice & naan for a group of 5. We were all stuffed after. I would recommend the spicy lamb dishes. The butter chicken was a bit too sweet for my taste but everything else was great.View more

rip off!! Beware!
6 pieces of beef & 6 pieces of lamb with some rice & a piece of bread for 28.69$
the cups they gave me was filled with almost 70% of their watery sauce.
I really do not recommend for take out as they will rip you off.
it's sad that you guys rip off students.
:: also they will OVER spice their food in order for you to feel "fuller". it's an old technique that only cheap restaurants do.
Bien que Ganges soit un resto tout simple, il est un de mes restos préférés. Les mets sont savoureux. Par contre le service a quelques fois des lacunes. Je ne sais si c'est une question d'organisation, mais il nous est arrivé d'attendre longtemps avant d'être servis.
We had unremarkable food at Ganges, & the worst service in town. The server dropped cutlery onto my lap & didn't so much as apologize - he just left it there for me to set my place with. He also treated one of our fellow dining companions with extreme contempt when she asked if the kitchen prepared a certain Sri Lankan specialty, as she had heard they did upon request.
I wouldn't go back to Ganges even if someone else was paying; terrible place - dark, dingy & unfriendly. There are countless excellent Indian restaurants in Montreal, & many nearby that far exceed Ganges.
Ganges somehow got a good reputation in the neighbourhood when it first opened, & is coasting on that.
This restaurant is terrible. I went once. The service was abysmal & the food was bland & boring. The server chose what we wanted to order without consulting us after we mentioned that we were vegetarian. We specifically requested 'spicy' food, & I feel like we got the opposite. The food was also cold, once it had arrived. We sat for two hours in an empty restaurant with terrible service. Never again. If I could choose less than a star, I would.
The food is simply delicious.... once you get it!
The wait is always too long. Actually I can't even remember having to wait that long anywhere else in the entire world. This is the only issue with Ganges. & it's not exactly the place to sit down for a few drinks while waiting for your food because you can see it & smell it, & let me tell you, it looks & smells so yummy that having three beers while you wait is not a lot of fun. Don't go on Fridays.
Last week I had my first, & quite possibly my last, dinner at Ganges (Sherbrooke West, corner Hingston, Montreal).
The food was fresh, fragrant, & delicious. FAR overshadowing this was the fact that the service was terrible - we were there for TWO HOURS. I understand that we were there at 7pm on a Friday night, so they were busy, however that is never an excuse for such poor service. We were not greeted once we entered the restaurant, simply gestured towards a table. We had to ask for menus, & it took some doing simply to get the waiter's attention. Once we'd made our selections, it took another 15-20 mins before a waiter came to take our order, & we had to ask for one to come over. Once he arrived, again, he didn't greet us, simply asking, "Ready to order?" The starter soup (a flavourful dal, with nice hints of coconut, lemon & coriander) arrived quickly, but the main dishes (beef dhansak & aloo begoon massala -eggplant & potato) took an additional 25-30 minutes to arrive. At this point, we were starving, so it was a good thing that the food was so flavourful. Once we'd finished, the waiting began again, this time for the bill. We asked for this & then waited some more (10 more mins). Once we received it, we went to the bar to pay for our meal. My boyfriend placed his debit card on the counter, & the waiter/manager said, "We don't take Interac." Then he walked away without a word. I was very tempted to just leave at this point. We paid by credit card & left. TWO HOURS after we'd walked in. Go for the food, NOT the service, & don't go when you're really hungry.
Overall a pretty good restaurant. Really enjoyed the lentil soup & naan bread. Main dish was curried shrimp which were quite tasty although a bit smallish in size. Seems like a popular local establishment.
We love this restaurant.The staff are wonderful,the decor is nice & the food is amazing.Don't miss this one!
