The Best Shawarma Dishes from the Middle East

The origin of the word shawarma is Turkish and means "it turns" or "it swivels". Shawarma is found in different forms and recipes and is very popular in Middle Eastern countries such as Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Israel, and Jordan. Shawarma consists of various types of marinated meat cut into thin slices, stacked onto a slowly-turning vertical rotisserie which creates juicy meat full of flavor. The type of meat used was originally lamb, but we can now find many restaurants using chicken, beef, or veal.

The best plates from the Middle East!

We have gathered the best shawarma dishes offered in Montreal and its surroundings.

RESTAURANT BEROYA

Beroya restaurant offers the most authentic Syrian cuisine in Laval. Bearing the ancient name of the Syrian city of Aleppo, you will find traditional dishes and a staff ready to make you discover their culinary heritage. The owners, cooks, and some of the waiters are from the Middle East. The meats are grilled on charcoal which gives an exquisite taste to the different dishes. All you have to do is choose the protein and sauce you want for a meal that will make you forget you are in Canada! If you can't decide which meat to have, we strongly suggest the mixed grill plate. Reserve your place online.

MIRAZU

A Turkish restaurant on St. Laurent Boulevard, Mirazu is the perfect place to enjoy authentic, homemade dishes. Mirazu's grilled plates are cooked over charcoal and served with rice pilaf (bulgur) or rice, grilled vegetables, and salad. Choose from lamb shish kebab, beef shish kebab (filet mignon AA), or rack of lamb. If you can't choose, there is a plate containing 5 grilled types of meat to share between 2 people. Don't leave without having a good Turkish tea or coffee! Book your brunch, lunch, or dinner online!

BOUSTAN

Ad

The very first Boustan branch opened in 1986 in Montreal and since then, more than forty other branches have opened in the city, province, and even in Ontario. Offering authentic, homemade Mediterranean cuisine at an affordable price, it is one of the must-try shawarma dishes. Served with rice, potatoes, coleslaw, and sauces, all you have to do is choose your favorite protein (beef, chicken, or combo). A vegan version is also available.

LE SHAWARMAN

Although Shawarman opened recently (December 2021), the reviews are unanimous that it is a new destination for Lebanese cuisine in Laval. Shawarma meat is offered in different forms: burgers, sandwiches, and plates. Let yourself be tempted by the traditional marinated beef option or the chicken option with grilled and marinated village-style breast. Poutine lovers, add extra meat for a great Lebanese-Quebec fusion. Enjoy it all on-site, take out or have it delivered.

MONTREAL KEBAB

If you're walking around Old Montreal, you might come across Montreal Kebab. Serving traditional Lebanese halal dishes in a historic building, you go there to enjoy the good chicken and/or beef shawarma plates. The extra-meat poutine is another option if you're in the mood for a fusion of tastes. Many agree that it is one of the most authentic in the city in terms of flavor. The portions are generous and the owners will welcome you with pleasure. All you have to do is decide if you want to eat in or take out. Please note that they are open from the end of April to the fall and are closed for the Winter Season.

SHAWARMAZ

Shawarmaz's three different locations in Montreal (on Peel), Vaudreuil, or Laval will offer you authentic homemade Middle Eastern cuisine. Their menu combines taste, freshness, and quality in every dish. If you want an original way to eat shawarma meat, we recommend the sushi platter: 6 pieces of wrap served in saj bread, sushi-style. You can also enjoy the mixed plate of marinated meat (beef and lamb) and chicken shawarma with pomegranate molasses and sesame cream sauce, served with rice, garlic potatoes, salad of your choice, pickles, and turnips. Order online or visit one of the restaurants to eat in.

AL-AMINE

In Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Al-Amine offers some of the best Lebanese shawarmas. Go there with an empty stomach, because the portions are generous. The plates are served with fries or garlic potatoes, rice, and a salad. Chef Mario's homemade hot garlic sauce alone is worth the trip! When visiting, you can also try one of their pizzas or falafels.

SUMAC

Sumac is a staple on Notre-Dame Street West when it comes to affordable Middle Eastern food. The shawarma plates are served with grilled pita, hummus, tahina, pickled turnips, and a choice of 2 salads. Sumac is known for having high-quality meat and very generous portions. At the same time, try their delicious falafels.

LASHISH AIRLIE

LaShish Airlie Restaurant in Lasalle offers you a healthy and refined cuisine that is faithful to the Lebanese culinary tradition. In addition to the excellent shawarma plate, it is imperative to try the different homemade sauces. Moreover, they are among the only ones to offer the option of eating a keto shawarma plate! They have a rotating spit that allows them to grill the meat vertically to bring out all the flavors. Don't hesitate to use their catering service for your special events.
