The pleasure of good food

With many unique restaurants where you can brunch in Montreal, gone are the days when we only had a few classic options like "2 eggs and bacon". Although classics will always have their place, we love restaurants that stand out for their originality when it comes to breakfast, the possibilities are endless.

Having first opened many locations in the big city of New York and its surroundings, restaurant Maman finally decided to come to settle here, in Montreal, and we are very glad about it. It's in a charming area on the outskirts of Griffintown that Maman is located.

First charmed by its flowery facade, we were then surprised when we got inside and saw how spacious the restaurant is. We received a very friendly, yet professional welcoming as soon as we got in, and we immediately got offered coffee while waiting for our table.

The rustic look of the dining room charmed us at first glance. The beams from which many plants are hung, the large barn style tables, the display unit full of pastries that make your mouth water are all details that assure us we would have a good time. Before we even took a look at the menu, we were won over by the decor and the warm atmosphere.

Maman is the perfect spot for breakfast or lunch, and of course the pastries and delicious coffee from a Brooklyn coffee roaster.

The plates were beautifully presented without any unnecessary fuss, we loved the food as much as the plates they were served in. The blue and white dishes used to serve the food are reminiscent of delicate Chinese porcelain, or a set of mismatched dishes that may have belonged to your grandmother.

Being completely incapable of settling on just one choice each, we decide to share a few dishes. While waiting for our main dishes, we decided to let ourselves be tempted by the mixed pastries plate, leaving it to the waiter to make the selection for us. We receive a lavender, white chocolate and blueberry cake, a matcha croissant and a chocolatine; a minute later, we didn't leave a crumb on the plate. We had heard about the reputation their pastries had so we didn't expect anything less than perfection.

The fact that everything looked so delicious, encourages us to order the famous chocolate chips and nuts cookie, which was named "Oprah's favorite" in 2017. Probably one of the best cookies we have tasted in our entire lives, no kidding!

Now let's move on to the main courses. Each person around the table chose different dishes, which we decided to share later; the "crème fraiche" pancakes, the "croque maman" with truffle, Brussels sprouts and fingerling potatoes, the ratatouille with eggs, the Claudia sandwich and the Maman breakfast sandwich.

Each plate was generous and appetizing. The smell of the "croque maman" would make any truffle and croque-monsieur lovers dream. The ratatouille with eggs, consisting of a casserole of eggplant, zucchini, and tomatoes, with a sunny side up egg and herb feta is the perfect definition of a comforting breakfast. Although smaller than imagined, the plate of Brussels sprouts and fingerling potatoes pleased us with its simplicity and execution. We particularly liked the mixture of ricotta and olive gremolata. The Claudia sandwich served in a baguette is inspired by a more Mediterranean kind of cuisine, with balsamic portobello mushrooms, feta spread, arugula and the pesto it contains. The Maman Breakfast sandwich was served on a brioche bun, in which it had a bacon and whiskey jam, avocado slices, an egg, and grilled tomatoes.

We end it all in style with succulent pancakes. We received a very generous portion of pancakes with some maple crumbles, maple flavoured mascarpone, maple nuts, covered with fresh berries. A real treat!

The owners of Maman wanted to recreate an atmosphere that is inspired by childhood memories, their mom's cuisine; following our visit, we could say that they highly succeeded. During the meal, everything that they are serving is imbibed by their passion for good food. Also, it is good to know that they are very accommodating for people with children, a plus, especially for brunch. Visit Maman from Wednesday to Sunday for a unique brunch experience. In addition to the usual time slots, it is possible to book the restaurant for a private party, a happy hour and why not a wedding reception?
