Kwizinn Restaurant, renowned among fans of Afro-Caribbean cuisine, is beginning a new chapter in its history.

After fruitful years in Verdun, chef and co-owner Michael Lafaille, along with his partner Claudia Fiorilli, have relocated their establishment to the vibrant district of Old Montreal.

Additionally, joining the team is Céline Diallo as the executive chef, tasked with supporting Mike in Kwizinn's ongoing development.

March 24th marked the final evening at their old location, an emotional moment for the community that has watched them grow.

In an exclusive interview with Michael Lafaille, co-owner and chef of the establishment, we delved into the motivations behind this change of direction and the new experiences awaiting guests in this new chapter of Kwizinn's story.

A New Address Full of Promise

The Old Port of Montreal, a neighborhood undergoing reinvention, welcomes Kwizinn in premises formerly occupied by l'Épicerie and renovated in 2018 by Laurent Godbout.

Michael and Claudia have managed to preserve this vision while adding their personal touch, promising a welcoming and innovative atmosphere.

"This is a place that combines history and modernity, and it was important for us to maintain this balance while adding our own essence," Michael explains.

The new Kwizinn features two distinct areas: a bar side with a lounge atmosphere for relaxed evenings, and another room designated for events with DJs and entertainment.

With 80 seats inside and 40 outside, the restaurant hopes to attract both tourists and locals. An expansion of the terrace is also planned for this summer, adding a new attraction to the site.

Sharing and Discovery: The Rhythm of Kwizinn

The brunches with DJs from the Afro-Caribbean community will continue to animate the weekends, while Thursdays will be reserved for themed evenings. Fridays and Saturdays will see a variety of DJs, and Sundays will be enlivened by Cuban nights.

"We want Kwizinn to be a place of encounter and sharing, not just a restaurant," asserts Michael.

The menu promotes conviviality with dishes like bao with short ribs, empanadas, and griot. He recommends ordering multiple dishes and sharing them.

"It's the best way to discover the richness of our cuisine," he says.

The restaurant is open every day and will also offer breakfasts and lunches during the summer weekday season.

Pairings and Innovations

At Kwizinn, innovation and collaboration are at the heart of the approach. Indeed, the restaurant works closely with wine and cocktail experts.

Mélissa Brault, a wine consultant from Vin dans les Voiles, collaborates closely with Kwizinn to enrich the wine list, predominantly composed of private imports.

La Maison Cocktail, meanwhile, helps create unique cocktails, in harmony with the restaurant's vision. Michael mentions the Tafyaté as the flagship cocktail, ideal after a long day's work.

More Than a Restaurant

Kwizinn's location is strategically chosen opposite the Bonsecours Market, with nearby parking.

But Michael's ambitions do not stop there. Passionate about innovation and meeting people, he is also proud of his food truck, which is enjoying growing success.

"It's an extension of Kwizinn, a way to go out and meet our customers," he explains.

The truck is already almost fully booked for the summer of 2024 and will be present at various events such as the First Fridays and Ahuntsic Public Market.

Kwizinn Settles in Old Montreal: A Future Rich in Flavors

With this move to Old Montreal, Kwizinn is not just changing address; it is reinventing itself while remaining true to its roots.

The mix of history, modernity, and culinary culture promises to make this new Kwizinn a staple of Montreal's gastronomic scene.

Michael and Claudia are ready to welcome their loyal customers and new visitors in this exciting chapter of their adventure.
