État-Major, a Gem in HOMA

État-Major, a Gem in HOMA

In a neighbourhood in constant evolution these past few years, a newbie has recently settled in with a style of its own. Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, HOMA for the ones in the know, now have a great collection of restaurants and residents couldn’t be happier. Finally, no need to go to the Plateau or Old-Montreal to enjoy a nice dinner!

Located right on the corner of Ontario and Jeanne D’Arc streets, État-Major is a beautiful restaurant with a capacity of 70. French bistro tables, a long bar lighted by industrial fixtures, a big fireplace and lots of woodwork all contribute to give the space a friendly and cozy atmosphere. You’ll feel right at home as soon as you walk throughout the front door.

État-Major features a blackboard menu that changes depending on ingredients’ availability and seasons, which always guarantees fresh and delicious food. They try as much as possible to use local products, in a french regional cuisine. I really appreciate this type of menu because you have new things to try every time you visit! Every dish is available À la carte or in the Table d’hôte menu by adding 12$ to the price of the main course. If you’re pretty hungry, I suggest you go for the latter, which includes the soup or salad, an entrée, a main course, dessert and coffee. Since it’s a Bring your own wine restaurant, you won’t faint when it’s time to pay your bill.

All plates are created with a long list of ingredients, spices and flavours and the waiting staff will patiently detail each of them for you. To tell you the truth, we were impressed! You have to know that the ingredients change pretty much everyday, so it takes a professional to explain the menu without having to check with the kitchen.

So we let our talented waitress help us out in our food choices. We began with the lamb tartare and the pan seared scallops, two savoury dishes of remarkable freshness. For the main course, I picked the lamb sirloin (did I ever tell you how I love lamb?) and my friend opted for the cod. As usual, we shared everything and it was all absolutely delicious. I have to admit my coup de coeur was for the cod, light and flaky, cooked to perfection and a great choice for a summer evening meal.

On a sweet note, we ended this meal with a chestnut Tiramisu, chocolate cream and the best cappuccino in the neighbourhood.

Bon appétit!
