Champagne & Good Times: a Winning Formula at Maison Saint-Paul

Many of us have this idea that champagne is to be consumed for birthdays, weddings or any type of celebration. Those who are used to drinking champagne on a regular basis are often perceived to be rich and famous. What if I were to tell you there’s a restaurant in Old Port of Montreal that specializes in champagne and bubbly, suitable for all tastes and budget? This is a place where you can even drink champagne on a Tuesday, simply because you feel like it, without anyone judging you. Such a place exists! It’s called Maison Saint-Paul and it certainly became for many people one of their favourite spots in the Old Montreal.

Located on St-Paul, right across the street from the splendid Marché Bonsecour is where you will find Maison Saint-Paul. As you walk in, you are immediately immersed into a joyful atmosphere. If you had a bad day or have something on your mind, you will soon forget about it. Everything screams “festive”! From the male waiters wearing suspenders and bow ties, the DJ playing fierce rhythms, to the champagne flowing freely. You will surely have a good night!

The atmosphere at Maison Saint-Paul is both fancy, but casual, one of the visions of the restaurant is that everyone feels welcomed; the important thing is that anybody could have fun. It is the very talented Chef Jacques Coutu who makes the magic happen in the kitchen. Although some people think that Maison Saint-Paul is first and foremost a nightclub, it's above all an excellent restaurant, thanks to Jacques! In addition to the regular “à la carte” menu, you will find displayed on the wall, exclusive dishes concocted each week with love and passion by the chef. Several enticing specials are available throughout the week, such as seafood Wednesdays and Tartar Thursdays.

Something very special makes Maison Saint-Paul even more unique. In addition to all the incredible products available on their wine list, their amazing sommelier Pénélope Delorme worked very hard so that Maison Saint-Paul has its own champagne made 100% of Chardonnay and its own cava from the Torello region in Spain. We had the chance to taste the products and they are absolutely delicious (and affordable)!

Fish and seafood lovers are going to be served at this restaurant. A wide selection of incredibly fresh products compose the menu as well as some dishes slightly inspired by Asian and French cuisine. During our visit, we decided to let the chef choose what we were going to eat and it was an excellent decision. We started with three appetizers: an opah tataki, a northern shrimp salad and a king mushroom entree with carbonara sauce. The opah, also called “the salmon of the gods” was a discovery for us; the flesh is incomparably tender. Served with a salsa verde and tortilla chips, this entree was refreshing and perfect as a starter. Northern shrimps are always a winning recipe, perfectly salty and tasty, they marry wonderfully with the creamy sauce in which they are served and the little lemony touch that balanced everything. The king mushrooms in the carbonara sauce were a delight. In addition to the mushrooms, there were potatoes and a poached egg on the plate. The egg yolk allowed all the ingredients to blend in with each other. It was honestly one of the best carbonara sauces I've eaten!

tartares

After that, an incredible seafood platter was served to us. Filled with a scallop and a salmon tartare, a salmon and an opah poke, oysters, whole shrimps and snow crab claws. We had four sauces to accompany the elements of the platter: A classic mignonnette, a clamato and pickle sauce, a creamy aioli style sauce and a "cocktail" sauce made with horseradish. Although the sauces were delicious, the quality of the products allowed tasting them with much appreciation without adding anything. This type of platter is perfect for sharing with others.

We ended the meal with a cheese platter instead of opting for a dessert, the selection was perfect and the accompaniments of fresh and dried fruits were perfectly selected to marry the cheeses.

In addition to making champagne more accessible to Montrealers who wish to celebrate, they will show you how to open a bottle like a pro. If you have not visited Maison Saint-Paul yet, you do not know what you are missing! This place is definitively to discover because everything is there to please: the atmosphere, the food, the service and the decoration. Stay tuned, they have nice surprises coming this summer. Cheers!
