Pizzeria Magpie
Mile-End
Service
Nourriture
3.0

The food is generally very good. The salads ($5-6) are great, as are the special entrées. The pizza dough and sauce are excellent but the many of the meat topppings tend to be overly salty. Pizzas are priced around the $15 range (enough for two with an entrée if you don't eat alot). Magpie is severely let down by the slow service. The pizzas take forever regardless whether you eat in or take out. I saw one person wait 45mins for a take out pizza and we regulalry wait 1 hour for ours to arrive if we order an entrée (45mins otherwise). The resturant is small so reserve whenever you can although they never seem to pick up the phone during the evening service. Also, go early and not when you are already starving. The long wait has almost made me leave a couple of times.

This place is a foodie's paradise and one of my best finds without a referral. It is now one of my top 5 restaurants for several reasons: 1. The food is incredible, and authentic (as confirmed by a Middle Eastern friend); 2. It's relatively cheap; 3. Service is friendly albeit a little slow sometimes; and 4. It's cosy Most of the menu is good. The best dishes are by far the baba ghanoush (smoky flavour), the beetroot dip, the muhamara with walnuts, the keftas (aubgerine), kebab with cherries and the lamb. I would suggest 2 cold dishes and 1 meat for two people (1 more if you're really hungry); 5 dishes for 4, etc. Cold dishes are about $7, meat dishes about $12. Beers are about $5-6 and cocktails $7.

Been to Joe Beef several times and it's definitely a place to go with friends. The starters and main courses are so big that they should ideally be shared. We made the mistake of ordering a starter and could barely eat the main course. The amount of food explains the price: around $15 for a starter and $30 for a main. I am in two minds about the food. We have had some good dishes and some less than average dishes. The latter suffer from a lack of flavour, which is disappointing given the rustic style of the food. This will not be my top choice of places to eat given their inconistency.

Best Portuguese food I have found so far in Montreal without actually tapping on a Portuguese family's door. The soups are good as are the seafood starters, which are cooked well. My fish was creamy and perfectly cooked but I found the paella type dish severely lacking in flavour. The natas were very good so at least we ended on a good note. Decor was a little cheesy and bar-like, which I found a little cheap. The service was slow in parts but the staff were nice. The only annoying part of the evening was the rowdy businessmen. The dishes are too inconsistent for me to return on a regular basis. My search continues...

Excellent food and service. However, I think there is better in Montreal at this price range.

Liked this place very much. The service was good although there were very few people so it may not be the case when it's full. The manager was very friendly though. The food was very good, nicely spiced and aromatic. The dishes could have been hotter though so for those that like it spicy, you may want to mention this. Would go back if I was in the area.

Food is comparable in quality to Tatami in Old Montreal. The cooked meat dishes are good and well presented. The sauces are a little on the sweet side though. The sushi dishes are better in terms of overall finesse and flavour. The decor is sophisticated and could do well either for a business meal or a romantic quiet dinner. A bonus for this location is the fact that Juliette & Chocolat is on the same street for those that wish to finish with something chocolatey.

Nice decor but the food is not their strong point. Food was disapppointing, especially the so called Quebecois specials. It would be better to stick to safer dishes such as the burgers. You can find better in the area so I won't be going back unless they radically change the menu.

The food is not quite authentic but this may be partly due to unavailability of key ingredients such as real chorizo. The North American "chorizo" is just plain disgusting. However, this restaurant manages a decent tortilla as a most of the other dishes. Not fabulous but you get what you pay for in this instance.

Disappointed not to see any other dishes (e.g. tagine) except for couscous with some variety of meat. The brik starter was not very good could honestly be made much better by most people at home. The jarret d'agneau was tender and well-seasoned. The mergeuz was gently flavoured but should have been more spicey and more flavourful. All in all, better than some of the other couscous places but if you're an OK cook, you can make better at home. I have even found great mergeuz sausages at Jean-Talon.

This Korean gem is hidden beneath a modest cafeteria style decor. I am sure any foodie will agree that the food is great and you can not go wrong with almost everything on the menu. In particular the seafood crepe, pork and vegetable stir fry, bulgogi (sizzling beef), and soups are fantastic. Great place for students or foodies alike. I'm glad to have found this place in Chinatown given that most of the other resturants are pretty awful and definitely not authentic. Word of warning - go early (ie 7pm) as sometimes this family restaurant closes early. Also they often get bus loads of Korean tourists - no joke so you may also want to call ahead.

Given the price you pay I expected more, much much more. Some of the food could have been straight out of a can from a French supermarket. French canned food such as cassoulet and confit de canard is actually quite tasty you don't expect to be served this at a restaurant. Don't be fooled/tempted by the posh-looking interior and presentation of the food. Save your money for a trip to France. Even cheap bistros over there serve better food than this. In fact there's an excellent restaurant in Paris with a similar-ish name (Aux vins des Pyrenees) which is fantastic.

This is the worst Eggspectation I've ever been to. The chefs are extremely frugal with the meat/fish and the sauces are awful. I ordered my usual and was shocked to find very little ham, less than half of what the other resturants serve. My friend had smoked salmon but only had a few of dollar sized pieces. The place is really noisy and the ambiance awful. The staff are really unattentive and on the 2 occassions I went, we had to wait a long time to be seated, order, get served and pay. A complete rip off.

Great rustic food with a good variety of dishes despite the pork-influenced name. The tasters/les amuses bouche were more like regular appetizers so go easy on these. The portions were large and satisfying and the quality of food was fantastic. However, I found most of the accompanying sauces were a little on the salty side. All in all this place serves great rustic style food and is a great place for eating, drinking and being merry. I went back recently and had the soft-shell crab. Like all the other dishes, the crab was too large. Therefore the dish was not as tasty or edible compared to the ones used by Chinese restaurants. I'll stick to the meat dishes next time....

I really liked this place until today when we encountered an INCREDIBLY RUDE 'hostess'. We didn't even get to sit down because she was being unreasonable. She couldn't sit us indoors so I asked to sit outside (despite the rain) and then switch when space became available, but she said that no changing of tables was allowed! In addition she left us waiting for a long time even though she was not occupied with any work. A large queue started building so I went to ask her if we could sit outside. She gave me a dirty look and asked me "are you in the line?" even though I spoke to her 5mins before! I didn't understand why she was so rude as I was polite from the beginning. It's a shame because I really liked the sandwiches atmosphere and had a good experience until we came across this snotty hostess. Some of my friends have experienced similarly BAD SERVICE so I suggest you stay away unless you don't mind it so much.

Good sushi and great atmosphere. However, I personally prefer the non-sushi type food at Katsura. The prices are a little more here than Katsura but the restaurant has a much nicer decor and is definitely a good place for a business lunch/date.

As the name suggests, the food tasted like it came off a conveyor belt. However, they tried to make up for this by delivering the dishes in American sized quantities. The service was almost non-existent and the place seemed more like a buffet place that an actual restaurant. The dishes were reasonably priced but given the quality, I'd rather have saved some money and gotten a frozen meal which would have been tastier.

It's supposedly the first and oldest curry house in Montreal. The food can be great or just average depending on the dish you pick. I highly recommend the methi gosht, and the naans are the best I've had so far. The place is tiny and always packed so reserve if you can.
