Chez Victoire
Le Plateau-Mont-Royal
Service
Nourriture
5.0

We have been looking forward to visiting Chez Victoire for quite sometime as we had heard they have a remarkable tasting menu. We were not disappointed! There are two versions of the tasting menu, a 3 choice and a 4 choice. We went with the 4 choice as we were really hungry and figured with a tasting menu the portions would be small. We were wrong. The first course was a choice of one of three 'starters', a lamb tartar, served with smoked toast was both beautiful and mouth watering. The salad was so gorgeous I did not want to put my fork in it but YUM! The third choice was 'head cheese' which we did not try. Let me reiterate, the size of these plates is quite amazing when you think how many courses you are going to have. The next course was a choice of braised pig cheek, sounds much better in french, or giant scallops served with sweet breads, a strange combination but worked perfectly. The reduction on the scallop plate was manna from heaven as were both the scallops and sweetbreads. The pig cheek was tender and the taste was warming....like the comfort food of my youth. The main course is one of five choices. The pulled pork burger was served with some of the best tasting fries I have ever had....amazing when you think we are in one of the french fry capitals of the world. The burger was also incredible...something so 'basic' was so perfectly done and so big my partner took home half! I ordered the steak which was served on a bed of mashed celery root and other seasonal veggies. I did not know how much I liked celery root until that moment. The steak was not a regular cut I recognized but juicy and tender with lots of texture and amazing flavor. We also tried the fish of the day which was very delicious. The dessert is really overkill but we dove into the warm melting chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream just to 'try' it and none of us left a bite! This place is both beautiful and 'hip' but not 'put offish'. We are not seniors but neither are we hipsters so we were very impressed with the welcoming and very professional staff. The tasting menu is available every night but on Sundays and Mondays it is available at a very discounted price. Worth the trip either way. BTW, the wine list was interesting and we tried both a sparkling white to start and a full bodied 'natural' red with dinner. Each course and the wine were served with a complete description from our server. All in all a feast for the eyes and the palate!
