Icehouse

2.5

Living but a 5 minute walk away, my girlfriend and I had to try Ice House, particularly after reading the positive review in The Gazette. Plus, I personally like to go to off the beaten track, more unusual eateries. However, Ice House disappoints big time. There is no printed menu, all items are scribbled by hand on a dimly lit chalk board above the main counter. Very hard to properly read what is available and prices, plus one feels awkward taking time to read it while standing amongst the other guests. For a place with hard benches (no back rests), picnic tables inside and butcher paper to act as plates, you’d think you would get good value and I had read The Gazette's positive review about the buckets of fried meat. Reality? 18$ for a “half bucket of ribs” consisting of four individual ribs and a tiny cupcake piece of corn bread. For a half bucket of fried chicken also at 18$, you get four pieces of overly dry fried chicken and a half biscuit. For both combined (a full bucket) you get one small portion of pieces of potatoes swimming in a sort of non-descript rich smokey sauce (cudos for the smokey part) and a small portion of ordinary cole slaw. The photo accompanying The Gazette review of pieces of fried meat overflowing a bucket with several pieces of biscuits on the side, is misleading. For dessert there were 2 choices: we had the cookies (borderline homebaked taste, more like ordinary) and “deep fried apple pie”, which was also on the small side and had a subtle “fried chicken” flavour (yuck)…and it was an unbelievable 9$ to our surprise. Bottom line? Very expensive for small amounts and nothing-to-write-home about plain food. The only redeeming thing? Creemore Springs beer on tap in 21 oz mugs (larger-than-normal pint) for 7$. Service is relatively friendly, but waitresses seemed a bit confused themselves.
