First of all, this is not a place for dieters, nor people looking for a quiet ambiance. It's a very family-oriented restaurant, with lots of kids and teenagers milling around and enjoying themselves. The place is definitely 50s to 60s diner style, with loud music, burgers, dogs, shakes, ice cream and more. I never had the true diner or ice cream parlour experience, so this was a welcome treat. Service was great - at one point, we had to change seats, because my husband is large, and was going to fall out of one of the smaller booths. So the manager promptly showed us a more suitable table. The waiter was friendly and efficient. The food came out pretty quickly, and our burgers were delicious (by the way, you do get a choice of bread), as were the sides we ordered - mac and cheese, and regular fries. My husband ordered a chocolate milkshake, and I ordered a banana/strawberry smoothie. My husband enjoyed a real milkshake for once, but my smoothie wasn't quite as sweet as I was expecting, but that's okay - with no extra sugar added, it was healthier. I will definitely eat there again, but I'll be sure to pick a quieter night, like Monday to Wednesday.
My husband and I each ordered the 9" all dressed pizza. Now, this is a place that's supposed to specialize in pizza and subs, right? How are we to know - we NEVER GOT OUR PIZZA! After we placed our order, we waited. In the meantime, people who were seated after we did started getting their meals. We asked the waitress when our food was going to arrive. We heard her at the back where the kitchen is, yelling at them that we ordered 2 pizzas all dressed. 15 minutes later, we STILL didn't get our pizzas and other customers were finishing their dinner. We had to leave, because we wanted to see a movie. The waitress was trying to get us to stay, saying the cook is cutting up the pizzas, but we were pressed for time. Dinner was chips and popcorn at the theatre. Will we go back again? What do you think?
REAL smoked meat - what a pleasure! Fries are great too! The only reason I didn't give the service 5 stars: You have to go to the counter to order and pay, but otherwise it's fine.
My husband and I have been to this FireGrill several times. The quality of beef is outstanding, and the service is very good and polite, although they don't go that extra mile. At our last visit, we had a cozy spot by the gas fireplace. I just wish that the rib steaks came in a smaller portion, like 12 or 10 oz. My husband prefers the FireGrill over le Biftheque. He finds the beef better-seasoned at the FireGrill. I find the sauce/juice for the prime rib a touch too salty, but otherwise in general, we are usually happy with the food and service. Would we go back there again? We have been, several times!
Excellent food, excellent service. We each started out with a hush puppy. My husband started off with the crab cakes, I with the seafood gumbo - delicious, with a good-sized scallop and shrimps, but I wish there was a little more seafood thrown in. My husband's main course was the shrimp jambalaya, mine was one of the evening specials - pork osso bucco - both delicious as well. For dessert, we selected the trio - bread pudding with a chocolate torte, and beignets - also excellent. A little out of our usual dining budget, but well worth the occasional visit. I would definitely go back there.
Pros: service was friendly and attentive, decor is urban chic. Upstairs can be reserved for private parties, even a DJ and dancing. The upstairs has a bar, and a lounge/living room separated by a wall with a two-sided fireplace (electric if I recall correctly). The view is terrific. Cons: the food - somewhat salty, and pricey for what you get. Would I go back again? If it was more affordable, I would think about it, but I could think about a lot of other places I would rather go to at that price.
Hot & cold appetizers were great. So was the sushi pizza. The main courses were very bland and boring. The wonton soup was good, but the dumplings in the soup were fried - I prefer them boiled. Decor was beautiful, except the seats were uncomfortable - too wide, & too low for dining at a table. If I recall correctly, the temperature was a little on the cold side. I would go back again, but I would only order the sushi and appetizers and skip the main course. Went back there Sept 7/12, and had sushi and appetizers only - sensational, creative and original. However, it's still cold in there!
Excellent food, excellent service, excellent decor. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars for the service - we went in the dead of winter, and it was freakin' cold in there!! I'm not the kind of person who's always cold; however, I had to put my winter coat on, and I was still freezing! It must have been only 15 degrees Celsius in there. They didn't bother to turn up the heat, even though we and some other customers eventually had to move to warmer sections of the restaurant. 40 West, if you're going to charge that much, I think you can afford to boost up the heat, or fine-tune the atmosphere control.
Great food, great service, great ambiance. Don't remember what my husband ordered, but I had lamb chops with a wonderful raspberry reduction, which gave the lamb a wonderful game-y flavour. They change up their menu occasionally, which works for some people, not for others.
If you really want to impress the woman in your life, take her to this restaurant. Excellent food, beautifully presented, and excellent service. Very pricey, but it's worth the occasional treat, if you can afford it. It doesn't look like much at all from the outside, but you will quickly see how large the place is. Cozy old world ambiance.
