Description

Very much a fan of anything culinary. Have some skill in the kitchen and experience working in the industry so my standards are a little high when it comes to food quality and service. That being said, I tend to prefer smaller, hole-in-the-wall type places to upscale restaurants.

I like travel, camping, hiking, diving, reading, movies.

I remember noticing the restaurant while walking by soon after it opened. I was charmed by the high tables they had by the windows warm wood and cool metal. The décor in general was very much to my taste - simple but sophisticated, unpretentious. We were a small party (seated at the window table that caught my attention in the first place) and were immediately seated and brought menus. We were greeted with a smile and service continues to be excellent throughout the evening. The menu is small but rather complex, the print version doesn't do the selection justice at all. Our server explained in detail the preparation, cooking methods, ingredients (and their origins when relevant) and seemed very knowledgeable. Most of us decided on the scallops as our main, save for one who had the beef short ribs. I was hesitant about the maple when he mentioned it...I love maple but when it comes to seafood, I find most chefs don't get the flavour balance right and the delicate seafood itself is overwhelmed. I'd heard consistently good things about this place though and I really wanted those scallops so I went with it. The scallops were excellent. Perfectly cooked, flavourful, tender, seared to a crisp finish on one side, served with zucchini, shiitake mushrooms, hazelnut butter...there was maple involved somewhere...and I think there was watercress on the plate too. I can't remember what else. Though I didn't try it, the beef ribs (sous vide with a bbq glaze ) received a rave review. The lobster that accompanied it was apparently rubbery though. A special of the day entrée, seared foie gras (with apple compote I think?) was beyond delicious. The cheese plate was quite good also though I felt there could have been more of a variety of textures. All Quebec cheese. I shared the 5-choice plate with a friend which was a good idea...I think it is best suited to 2 people (at least). The other desserts looked delicious too. Portion sizes are not large. Just the right size to be satisfied after 3 courses. I don't have a very sophisticated palate when it comes to wine so I selected a muscadet which I typically enjoy. The server helped with the selection of a couple of other wines though and seemed to be knowledgeable. They seem to have a good selection. All in all it was a lovely meal (as is evidenced by my overly long review) and we're looking forward to returning. I will also at some point try their lunch (new menu every 2 weeks).

We picked this place on a whim for some take-out sushi. The menu is varied and he waitress was helpful with suggestions. We had the: - Warm shrimp, tuna & mango maki - Tiger eye maki - Blueberry & tuna maki - Lobster numaki The tiger eye was good but nothing very unusual. The others were more creative combinations and were so delicious. I wish we had ordered more. DEFINITELY going back!

I've been going for years. Very good beer, decent selection of snacks. I like the decor...it's intimate but very open at the same time. They have a terrace in the summer. The service is AWFUL though. They're slow, I've been overcharged, some staff are unpleasant (but not all). Still, I keep going back for the beer. It's actually a decent place for a first date - more upscale than a pub(and has better beer) but still casual. They have great beer and alright coffee, snacks. Nice little nooks to sit and talk.

I've been here twice now. Food is very good and the menu, though small, is quite diverse. I preferred going in the summer and sitting outdoors as I found sitting inside to be very noisy. My Francophone friend told me that there was some unpleasantness when she asked for an English menu for me (before I arrived) but the service was perfectly pleasant to my face although she had to translate a little. I did have a little trouble making the reservations in English over the phone.

I've been to both the Bishop location many time and have now been to this (St-Laurent) location several times too. The food doesn't seem to be as good as at the Bishop location. The standard fare (savoury pies, burgers, fish and chips, wings, etc.) is decent enough but some items on the menu fall short. The last time I was there I ordered the chowder. Waitress said it was 'amazing' and highly recommended it. It was awful. Not hot enough, tasted sour and a little 'off', seafood was rubbery(frozen perhaps?), texture was lumpy and suggested too much flour/starch was used. I barely touched it - informed the waitress is wasn't very good. No apology or offer to replay or compensate in any way. So in general, it's a fun atmosphere, plenty of tv screen for watching the game, sometimes the live music is quite good, decent beer selection.

Good meat pies. Best I've had in Canada. I found service a little slow and the premises very hot, cramped and stuffy. However, you really don't need to sit down with a meat pie like this so I like taking mine and a cold pop to Parc Mont-Royal and lazing on the grass. They do have little side salads if you find meat in a pastry an unbalanced lunch (which I do...I NEED some veggies or fruit to feel right somehow...but that's me). The salads are unremarkable though. They also serve some other treats..dessert and such. Another little part of their business is carrying some food products that Aussies may miss from home. Vegemite and Tim tams among other things.

Fantastic food. Quite authentic. For those who are interested in real Szechuan food. Not a place you should go to if all your interested in is sweet and sour chicken and Broccoli Beef (Not that I have anything against those mind you ;) ). The restaurant is, to put it kindly, no frills. Same for the service. However, the people who work there are just fantastically nice. Friendly and helpful though unfortunately VERY busy. I do wish they would have one more person working the floor on busy days. My favourites are the 'twice cooked fish fillet', Cumin Chicken, and the Stir Fried Green Beans (which I order without Pork though they actually come with). The black pepper beef is also very good though I don't think is traditionally a Sczechuan dish. I could be wrong though. Highly recommended. I swear the food is so good that I almost want to give the place a horrible review to keep it a secret as much as possible ;).
