My husband and I wanted to find a nice local restaurant for our 25th and we chose La Seranata. My husband and I are vegetarians ever since my husband's cardiologist told him after his heart attack at 35 that he needed to make drastic changes if he wanted to remain healthy. We love Italian restaurants because of the amazing heart friendly meditarranean traditions. They have so much choice given the amazing variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, legumes, grains etc that Italy has to offer and their amazing history of mediteranean cooking! Generally, for special occasions, we call to a few finer restaurants and ask if the chef can make us a special menu and we are never disappointed with Italian chefs! Our plans this year were a bit last minute so we decided to simply shop around and find a good local restaurant to eat at. After viewing a few Italian restaurants in the West Island we chose this one because there appeared to be more overal selections. The service was impeccable and we were very well taken care of. However … I found the food uninspired and it appeared that in the absence of animal fats (meat, cream sauces etc) they did not quite know how to live up to the Italian culinary excellence we have come to expect. The meatless items were overpriced given that they were given no more importance and preparation consideration that one would give a “side dish”. It was clear that this Italian restaurant relies very heavily on the “centre of the plate” concept of needing a slab of meat or a corpuous amount of oil/fat to make a meal a meal. My endive salad was pricy given the state of the endive (although the balsamic dressing was gorgeous!) and my gnocchi did not blow my doors off. My husband's soup was not really coming off as a fresh soup but rather a salty version of a good quality canned soup. My husband took the risotto which again, he found salty and not very flavourful. We had a nice evening overall but we won't be going back.
