In 2019, La Centrale noticed an underrepresentation of individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds in its regular programming, despite Laval being one of the most multicultural cities in Quebec.
The organization commissioned research firm SOM to conduct a study on the cultural habits and needs of Laval's residents, helping to assess potential participation and the reach of similar cultural events across Quebec. Following this, La Centrale formed an advisory committee of mentors to support the development and growth of the festival project through a sensitive and participatory dialogue process.
In the midst of the pandemic, the first edition of Festival MOSAÏQUE Laval was launched in the summer of 2021, despite the challenges and uncertainties tied to the complex public health situation. Primarily music-focused, this inaugural edition provided La Centrale with a golden opportunity to meet its goals of civic participation and social engagement, by spotlighting and celebrating the cultural diversity of Laval.
Without a dedicated venue, La Centrale embraced the idea of reclaiming public space for cultural purposes. These spaces became our playground - places to be reimagined and transformed so that Laval's citizens could enjoy new experiences just steps from home.
Festival MOSAÏQUE Laval has since established itself as a key event on Laval's artistic calendar, with a mission to celebrate the richness of cultural diversity through the arts. The festival evolves in line with five core values: inclusivity, boldness, diversity, solidarity, and respect.
