An eclectic old house, Villa Armando is one of the more authentic Italian restaurants I've been to in Montreal. Upon walking in I was impressed by the classic decor and the choice of dimmed lighting that created a romantic yet relaxing ambience. The dumb waiter in the corner and the wine cellar in the front only further added to the timeless feel. The wait staff was very professional as we were greeted and seated promptly upon our arrival. Throughout the night we did not feel rushed, though i noticed that they constantly had an eye on the table so as to verify that all was well. The food was executed to par with the setting and service with each and every member of our party of four thouroghly enjoying their dish. The gnocchi were light and fluffy, the rabbit tender and moist and both pasta dishes (frutti di mare and porcini) were served with flavourful sauce. Overall,a job very well done. Though not quite warm enough at the time of our visit, there is a gelato parlour that is a part of the restaurant in a second establishment on the property. I have been there before and must say that they have some of the best gelato I have ever tasted. A definite must for those visiting during the warmer months.

I took my mother to l'Academie this past Friday and was greatly dissappointed.upon entering the restaurant we could tell that there was great care taken during the decorating process. It has a simnple yet elegant decor despite the fact that the tables are placed a little too close together. Unfortunately, the food just didn't measure up. While their multigrain bread prvided with the bread basket is one of the better ones I've tried at any italian restaurant, the meals fell flat. We both opted to skip the appetizer and head straight for the main course. I chose the Linguini Vongole while she went with the duck in a raspberry and porto sauce. One thing that really concerns me is the fact that I was unable to change the type of sauce paired with my clam linguini. I asked that they use an arrabiata rather than the light white whine sauce with which it is normally paired and was told that the kitchen is unable to do so on Friday and Saturday nights. This leads me to believe that they simply have the suace prepared in large quantities before hand and spoon it over the pasta once an order is received rather than properly finishing the pasta in the sauce so as to absorb the flavour. This belief unfortuantly was not proven to be false upon receiving my dish. There was very little flavour as it tasted as though I was eating pasta sitting in clam juice. As for the duck, my mother said the sauce wasn't bad and the duck wasn't fatty like some she had had in the past but the dish came out cold. Service was slow and our waiter seemed rather distracted. He continually looked off while we were trying to order as if he had somewhere else to be. They say you get what you pay for and in this case, that proved to be true. Though the prices were more than reasonable, I would likely need to be paid to return for a second try.

I just recently took my mother here for her birthday dinner an must say that I was not impressed. I did't realize how commercial the place was and though the decor was quite nice, the ambiance just wasn't there. It was loud and busy making it difficult to carry on a conversation without raising your voice. From the time we were to seated to when our order arrived only took about 30 minutes; problem was the waiter made a mistake when submitting my order to the kitchen therefore forcing me to sit and wait another 15 minutes while the error was being fixed. By the time my meal came my mom was already halfway through hers. The pizza was ordinary at best. While the crust was thin and crisp the toppings lacked flavour. My mother said hers was quite good (the Caprina) but I unfortunately could not say the same for my own (Seafood). The only real flavour I got from it was the strong garlicy after taste that remained long after my meal was completed. All and all it wasn't necessarily a bad experience, just not a memorable one. With so many other options when it comes to dining out in Montreal, I certainly will not be giving Ottavio a second try.

I visited Artigiani's last Friday with my family for the first time. The decor was nice with a stone wall in the back that offered an upscaled, pub-like feel to the restaurant. Our appetizers included the Arancini which was fried perfectly crisp with a generouse amount of mozzarella inside and a simple house salad topped with a balsamic vinegrette. The waitress told us that Ceasar salad was not on option but I question whether this was actually true or if she just wasn't aware as it was her first week on the job. The menu states that you can customize your pizza with various meats, vegetables and cheeses but when I asked which meats this included she told us it was only italian sausage. Luckily she went and asked another waitress to be sure and later came back and corrected herself. All three of us order the pizzas; one carusso, one semplice with shrimp and one artigiani which were all mediocre at best. The hot chili oil did add a nice kick but other than that there was nothing to write home about. The crust was average as were the toppings, though the sauce was fairly good. With such a limited menu you would hope for better execution of the dishes, especially with the claim of cooking "A typical Neapolitan pizza according to the rules of the art". The prices are very reasonable which goes to show that you truly do get what you pay for. Though the waitress was new and a bit lost at times, she did do a fairly good job and I'm sure will be quite good with time as she seemed friendly and did her best to cater to the guests. The bill took a while but I think it was more her trying not to rush us than anything else. All in all it was a fairly good little restaurant, nothing more nothing less.
