Every summer, we cannot miss the opportunity to swing by Terrasse Nelligan to soak up some sun and order their Clear Sangria made of sparkling wine, peach liqueur, white cranberry juice and lychees, or their signature Mojito. Next time you want to have a drink while enjoying the weather, think about that stunning rooftop part of town! The upbeat music was pleasantly loud and modernly rhythmical, the crowd and the staff were happy and laughing. Everyone was in the greatest of vibe and we can feel that the place itself was pleased to celebrate the special event with soap bubbles flying everywhere at the main entrance in the heart of Old Montreal. After an evening filled with bubblies, food and laughter, La Champagnerie definitely deserved to be a hot spot in Montreal’s restaurant-bar scene. With such a beautiful restaurant and trustful potential on their side, Labarake could definitely have come up with something more consistent but especially, more innovative and original than what was served during the evening of their first anniversary. Fingers crossed for next year’s anniversary! For now, let’s bring a toast to their first-year anniversary and with them another year of success! Because I’ve only been here twice and tried two different kinds of sandwiches (I will let pictures speak for themselves), I don’t know if the other dishes and desserts are as good. The one thing I know for sure is it is affordable and the quantity and delicious mix of ingredients are filling enough in a good way. Plus, the location on Saint-Denis has an outdoor terrace which is lovely now that summertime is finally here in town! We were happy to be part of La Boite aux Huîtres's first ever edition of the "Merci pour les Huîtres" event ("Thank you for the Oysters" event) in collaboration with Virginia Seafood. Three kinds of oysters were part of the event: J&W Seafood from Lower Bay Western Shore, Massawadox Salts from Upper Bay Eastern Shore and Sewansecott from Seaside. A little suggestion, the next time you will pass by the Jean-Talon market, come visit La Boite aux Huîtres and slurp some fresh delicious oysters! We promise you will fall in love all over again with the sea because we did! Read more on http://theforbiddenmeal.com/2015/05/12/la-boite-aux-huitres-oysters-season-1st-edition-by-virginia-seafood/
With an outdoor terrace, it is one of Montreal’s perfect place to soak up some sun while eating out without having to break the bank. Everything is approximately in the $15 range and the food tastes just fine. However, don’t hope for the prettiest of presentation or the finest of cuisine as you get what you pay for. The standards are there and we even felt that we got more more food (in terms of quantity) than what we paid for. Lately, we just discovered their unique sorbet flavour called “cinq épices” (or “five spices” for my English readers). Based on an original Italian recipe, their sorbets come in more than 25 different flavours. “Cinq épices” caught our attention just by its name. Usually, when you think of five spices, you think of a tea or hot beverage. In this case, it was transformed into a cold pleasant dessert, not too sweet and perfectly spiced up with the intensity of the chosen ingredients. The light texture makes you forget you’re guiltily eating a “dessert”. Read more on http://theforbiddenmeal.com/2015/05/04/suite-88-chocolatier-perfect-place-for-creative-gelatos-and-other-sweets/
Our experience at Le Pois Penché was far from being bad. However, we just didn’t feel the “it” factor. Even if the food was bland and its presentation was a bit off, the staff was nice and the ambience of the restaurant was pleasantly Parisian enough. Will I go back? Probably not for brunch. Montreal is filled with brunch spots in the same price range and the competition is pretty tight. Le Pois Penché has work to do on the mixtures of different flavours and spices and perhaps, a more modern and captivating version of their plate presentations. Overall, I would strongly recommend Punjab Palace to Indian food lovers and/or adventurers. According to my first experience there (and it won’t be my last one), the value versus the quality is something to consider. They are generous with the portions and all the flavours are very present. I will definitely come back and try out other dishes though just by curiosity. Read more on http://theforbiddenmeal.com/2015/03/05/punjab-palace-cheap-price-un-cheap-flavours/
If you are looking for a romantic yet causal BYOW kind of place for a date or a get-together in a small group of friends, this place is an option. However, don’t hope for the “it” factor or any kind of “punch” because I have a feeling Les Canailles is still in the “safe” zone for now. Great ambience but it is lacking in the food department. Would I recommend Flyjin to all of my readers? Absolutely! If you are like me and enjoy Japanese fusion cuisine, special cocktails and/or simply wine, the Old Montreal and its trendy crowd, you would have to consider Flyjin at least once in your life. I would want to like this restaurant because I can feel its potential, but unfortunately, my experience was mediocre to be honest. Perhaps my hopes and expectations were too high. However, for the same price (or even less), there are plenty of other restaurants in town that can offer you that higher gastronomic level I am talking about. This is probably one of the worst "fancy" restaurant for Asian food... I was very disappointed even though I felt that the staff had good intentions and were making their best to give a good customer service. Read more on http://theforbiddenmeal.com/2014/10/15/kyomi-the-exotic-illusionist/
