Ahh Tapeo. I would like to like it. Vibrant ambiance, good location, good crowd. Undercooked paella, a little skimpy on the portions, and many dishes came lukewarm. Mixed feelings when i saw our bill... not my favorite on the quality/value scale. Alas, there are so many choices in Montreal, it's hard not to have established favorites to compare against. Still, overall a decent place to get together for a couple of snacks and drinks, go in with some flex dollars and you could probably have a great time.

I read so many raving reviews about Nora Gray, so i couldn't help to try it for myself. The place is lovely, what a fantastic job they did with the decor. The look and feel is really unique and felt quite art deco in a different place and time! The food was good, but not outstanding on the quality/value scale. I could definitely see this as being a good place to bring a date, would surely impress.. For me, it didn't quite hit home run to become one my favorites.

What a cute little neighborhood restaurant! Very popular, great proximity to the Atwater market, decent brunch options. You've come to the right place if you like brunch! Honest portions, many options, good restaurant to bring friends because everyone will find something! Nothing fancy, but exactly what you want on a lazy Sunday "morning" over some fresh juice or coffee.

I had always been curious about this place, so i decided to hit it one day to try it once and for all. Reviews i've read on the restaurant for bunch had generally been positive with a trusted long-standing reputation. To my disappointment, however, I didn't enjoy my experience all that much to be honest. Menu was pretty bland, standard, and service a tad snob. At least I've tried it, so no more wondering.

If i crave Korean food while in Montreal, Hwang-Kum is my one and only place, with no other contending equal. Homey ambiance, authentic cuisine, down-to-earth service, what a find! The only downside is that it has unpredictable vacation schedules!!! It has happened to me numerous times to show up only to find a hand written sign on the door advising that the restaurant is closed... I can certainly sympathize as it is a family-owned restaurant after all, and vacations are well deserved! But selfishly, i wish it was always open, and could take reservations!

Great lively crowd, very fun to go in groups, and you have to try the saké bombs at least once for fun if not twice for repeat fun! Pricey markup on saké selection, but what restaurant doesn't on their wine menu nowadays... decent late night snack option if you want to do everything under the same roof, get well fed, a bit or more than a bit tipsy, and make a lot of noise in the middle of it all. There needs to be more competition with izakayas in montreal to bring down those wait lines. Guu and Zakkushi should definitely expand into Montreal to spread the love of good japanese food and hospitality.

Great food, mature crowd, awesome wine selection and taste! We've been several times and simply can't get enough! Spectacular dishes, only aspect that doesn't hit always hit home is a little weak on the dessert side.

I tried Club Chasse et Peche after being so impressed with their sister spin-off Le Filet. It was good, a little on the pricey side. But you have to expect that when you set foot in Old Montreal, so I understand. It was nice to try, maybe to return once in a while to check out menu changes.

Very cute, charming place. Generous brunch, a bit on the carnivore side, you`ve been warned! Overall good quality/price ratio. I will definitely return to see what they have to offer for dinner and drinks. Love the decor. Courteous and attentive service.

I've only been once to Kazu and have been meaning to return. My first experience was great! I really enjoyed their ramen, which brought back many memories from my travels in Japan. I'd certainly go back to try the other items on their menu. The only downside about Kazu is their popularity and lack of space. While its small size works well with the Isakaya concept, it's discouraging to always find a huge line up in front of the restaurant all the time. Sure it adds to the hype and builds anticipation prior to getting your table, however, just thinking of the wait time is already enough to convince me to pick eating somewhere else.

I had built up high expectations before going to Mythos, as per recommended by a friend. The decor was great, the service attentive, the ambiance very family-oriented. The portions were generous. Particularly memorable was the grilled octopus, it was absolutely delicious I could have just that as a main dish! The only aspect that scored lower with me has to do with the price-quality ratio. When I finished my meal and paid the bill, I felt like I overpaid for what we ate. 250$ for a table of 5 without any wine or dessert. For potatoes and grilled meat/fish, I thought it was a bit pricey to be honest. Nice place for groups though!

Best Japanese restaurant in Montreal. Having traveled Japan myself, Sushi Yasu offers an honest, authentic, and fresh cuisine that's affordable. I order take out and have been returning as a happy customer. The Japanese chefs take great pride and care into their work and it shows. No cutting around corners, everything is freshly prepared with the best availability of ingredients. My lower score for service has to do with the attitude that the wait staff has. No smiles, not very polite, makes me feel like they're doing me a big service by serving me. Efficient yes, memorable service maybe not so much. On top of that, the waitresses are all Cantonese and I can understand what they're saying about the clients. More discreet, professional behavior may be better.

I absolutely loved Le Filet from beginning to end. I'm very fond of seafood and they nailed it! I've been to the restaurant twice now and I've basically tasted every plate of their menu. Particularly memorable dishes include the pork belly with scallop, seafood soup with foie gras, cavatelli and veal cheeks, crab risotto. The service was very professional and attentive. The wine selection decent. The ambiance very hip and trendy. Writing about it makes me want to return.

Pintxo

I've been eager to pay Pintxo a visit for quite a time now. It took me so long because I was concerned about the small size of the portions relative to price/quality ratio, but I can now confirm that Pintxo lives up to its reputation. The ambiance and decor was great, I loved the paintings! The wine recommendations were dead on, thumbs up to the server who took care of us. We sampled the tasting menu, comprised of two pintxos and one main dish of our choice. I had the seared black cod with cherry tomatoes and virgin sauce, it was simply delicious! I can't wait to go back!

I have been a loyal customer to The Sparrow for their wonderful brunch on the weekend. So, we tried Lawrence when we learned that the kitchen team moved into this new restaurant. We were very excited as they expanded to offer a supper menu. The ambiance is hipster, the service just right, and the food is good but we found it a bit too expensive for our budget. The grilled duck hearts were a hit! The foie gras over lentils was way too salty however and pricey for the size. The clams with lardon were delightful! And my fish was cooked with the right timing. Overall, great flavors, nice presentation, but a bit overpriced. We didn't even have wine and got out over 100$ bill. We will certainly return for their awesome brunches, but may return for supper only occasionally due to price/quality ratio.

Le Boucan

Service

I visited Le Boucan for the first time after following the popular series The Opener from the Food Network Channel. Things were exactly like we saw from the show from decor to menu. We sampled their pulled pork sandwich as well as their house-famous smoked ribs. The place itself has its own character. I particularly liked the vintage saloon signage and the menu on the wall. Now, about the food. The pulled pork sandwich was well executed: good sauce and generous portion of meat. The only element that scored lower on the dish was the hot dog bun, maybe they could look into some other types of bread to make the dish even more unique. The smoked ribs were decent, but not fall off the bone at all, nor fat and juicy like it should be. We really enjoyed the coleslaw sidedish!! However, the potato salad was stale and tasted rather bland. As well, the fries were dry and stale. Overall, I don't regret having gone to Le Boucan, prices were very reasonable and service was friendly. However, I must say I probably won't become a regular given the small size of the menu.

Jérôme Ferrer - Europea
Centre-ville
Service
Nourriture
4.0

Europea is good, but would have been even better had I not been to Toque 3 weeks earlier. We sampled the Menu Degustation with wine pairing. We started off very strong with their Lobster Cappuccino with Truffles. It was creamy, savoury, complex, and beautifully presented. It was followed by an asian-inspired Mediterranean Bass, interesting as well. The Scallop Risotto was well executed, fresh and seared perfectly and the foie gras turned out decent. The Cornwell Chicken had my expectations built up quite high with the previewing of its cocotte and everything, but it tasted quite bland and dry to be honest. The funghi raviolis were delectable, followed by smoked beef short ribs so interestingly presented. The most disappointing part of the meal was dessert. The last courses consisted of very childhood-inspired sweets with no logical suite to the classic flavours of french cuisine. Barbe a Papa, cookies, macarons, meringue, whipped cream, etc. It was not a seamless suite to the menu, but rather perceived as being an interruption of the tastes and flavours we experienced all evening. Cheeses were no surprise either, small portions, brands that we can get anywhere, lack of surprise. Overall, Europea was quite good, but not as refined as Toque, yet we paid exactly the same price. The wine pairing was also good, but once again did not throw me off my chair. Europea pays a lot of attention at making the experience memorable. Tableside romance is very noticeable and well communicated by the waitstaff. However, if I'm only judging by the quality and refinement of the actual cuisine, then I must admit that it came under par vs Toque. I would highly recommend Europea to anyone, so long as you can spread out your frequency to haute cuisine dining. Otherwise, you might risk comparing all night and not fully enjoy your moment.

Mikado
Outremont
Service

3.5

I got take out from Mikado, so I cannot comment on their table service or in-house ambiance. They had very timely execution, nevertheless, as my order was ready when we arrived to pick it up. I will therefore share my appreciation for their makis and sashimis. Full score for the quality of their fish. I recently spent 3 weeks in Japan and the sashimi pieces reminded me of my trip every bite of the way. As to the makis, some were more interesting than others, but I wasn't thrown off my chair. One improvement they can work on will be the cumcumber fillings, which were too coarsely chopped and had too much of it. The sushi rice could also need some work it as it was a tad too hard and dry. These were minor flaws, but they do not take away the fact that Mikado is a very decent option in town. Bishoku on Bishop still make my favorite makis in Montreal.

We visited Magpie with friends after reading an interesting review on the restaurant. We kicked off strongly with a delicious charcuterie platter, where the pork loin pieces got me totally hooked! We simultaneously sampled their house meatballs, which were also excellent, melt-in-your-mouth texture, bathing in a delicious tomato sauce. We did not like the hipster water glasses they served our wine in however. The problem with these glasses is that they would make any wine taste like grape juice as they funnel aroma very poorly, volatilizing a wine's distinctive nose. I personally think it's a big no no for any restaurant! They would've scored much higher on me had they given us real wine glasses. Moving on with the pizzas now, many factors made it a great success! Their San Marzano tomato sauce, traditional oven crust and generous toppings. We had the goat cheese as well as the fennel sausage, both were very tasty! Finally, the brownie was a big hit at our table while the peanut butter cookies scored lower as it was too reminiscent of Reese chocolate. Overall though, it was a successful evening.. Of course, I'm deeply hoping that they would serve our wine in real wine glasses on our next visit or else we just won't order anything to drink.
