I attended this restaurant twice: once with a large group of people, and soon after with a good friend. The two experiences were as different as night and day. The first time, one of the members of my group knew the chef, so we were treated to exquisite tapas and a truly perfect experience. The restaurant was full on a Thursday evening and the ambiance was wonderful. The second time was on a Friday night. The restaurant was empty, the waiter claimed that they didn't have a certain wine when I'd tasted it there just a few evenings prior to that. Two of the wines they suggested were mediocre at best, although this is a restaurant with a reputation for a great wine list. The octopus was charred in places. The salad was drenched in oil and lacked subtlety. The grilled meats platter was perfectly ordinary and would have been just as decent and far cheaper at the Portuguese takeout grill a few doors East. The dessert, a spaghetti-squash tart, which is supposed to be sticky and moist, was dry and over-baked. It was a bit of a disaster and I felt embarrassed that I'd recommended this place to my friend. If the chef only excels when his friends are around, I don't think I'll be coming back.
