Il Focolaio
Centre-ville
Service
Nourriture
3.0

We hit up Il Focolaio for the 1st stop on our downtown pizza crawl. The Margherita pizza's crust was thin but retained a certain level of chewiness while the sauce was very scarce so we couldn't really taste it. The basil flavour was absent and we encountered a few salty pockets here and there. The Polpetta Di Mamma Angelina pizza had the same crust with good sauce coverage this time. The sweetness of the red pepper comes through but we wished there were more meatballs. Overall, Il Focolaio is an OK place for your weekday lunches, but we wouldn't recommend it for a night out on the town.

Thanjai is a South Indian restaurant in Côtes-des-Neiges with a very unusual menu. You won't find any Tikka, Tandouri or other Northern and Anglo-Indian regulars here... Instead, you'll find such things as Rasam, Potato Bonda, Sambar Vada, Dosas and the likes. There are two things we liked about Thanjai: First, its prices ($25 per person tax and tip in? wow). Second, the fact that the dining room was, with the exception of our table, filled with Indian families. You know you're in good hands when the local community frequents a place for a Sunday dinner.

We've always thought that Gandhi was one of the most charming Indian eateries in town, what with its location on historic Saint-Paul Street and its intimate setting. The menu is made up of a host of staple Indian dishes from all over the sub-continent, although mostly from the Eastern and Northern regions. It has a great table d'hôte from $25.50 to $32.50, a great value if you ask us. When we think of Indian food, we envision pungent spices and fiery heat. Food-wise, our experience tonight failed to take us on the adventure we were hoping for. Most of the dishes were bland with poor presentation. However, Gandhi's charming setting and unblemished service makes it a worthwhile destination for Old Montreal residents or passers-by (it is the only Indian eatery in the area after all).

Over the last few days, Sofitel Montreal hosted the head chefs from Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi for a week of Vietnamese cuisine at Renoir restaurant. The event's Vietnamese menu consisted of five courses, with two mains to choose from. At $45 per person, there is no denying the bang you are getting for your buck at a place of this standing. We were delighted by the experience tonight. Aside from the great dining room and service, it was refreshing to eat Vietnamese gastronomy in a posh setting like Renoir's.

Satay Brothers
Saint-Henri
Service
Nourriture
4.0

A few weeks ago, the popular Satay Brothers food kiosk from Marché Atwater opened up a permanent location on a dreary stretch of Saint-Jacques Ouest. The interior is very simple, cozy and intimate, not to mention tiny. There are three communal tables and a small spot on the bar to choose from, just about enough to seat 30 people at most. The wall menu, written on a chalkboard, features a few fan favorites such as the satay chicken skewers and steam buns, as well as other Southeast Asian dishes and a section for changing specials. We went with the Tofu Steamed Buns (a hit), Laksa Lemak soup (a classic!) and Mee Goreng noodles (so-so). Based on tonight's dinner, we can confidently say that the brothers are still on the right track with their new establishment. This one is bound to be a permanent fixture in the burgeoning Saint-Henri neighborhood.

Classy, ritzy and intimate is how we would describe the setting at Da Vinci. It's the kind of place you would go to with your significant other or your parents on their anniversary. You know when you walk into a restaurant with several empty tables in the main area, but are told by the staff to sit in a different, isolated, mostly-empty section? Well, that was our experience tonight, and we weren't happy about it one bit! Tonight we went with the Sinfonia Verde and Mozzarella di Bufala for starters (both hits). Then we went with the Linguine Fini del Pescatore (so-so) and finally the Filetto di Vitello di Latte al Forno (a miss). Da Vinci is a relic from a bygone era when upscale restaurants actually invested in posh interiors. Based on tonight, unfortunately, we felt that was the only predominantly positive aspect of our dinner. The food tasted good mostly, but lacked a certain creativity in presentation, while the "table" mishap left a bit of a bitter taste in our mouths.

BEVO Bar + Pizzeria

BEVO's interior is a hodgepodge of styles. Old meets new in this spacious two-storey restaurant that features a multitude of seating arrangements, from regular and bar-height tables to suspended pod chairs. The menu is broken down into four sections: antipasti, primi, secondi and pizze. We decided to sample one item from each of those, which worked out really well. We went with the Calamari Fritti (so-so), Fazzoletti con Ricotta (a hit), Poutine di Vitello Brasato (a hit) and Saccense Pizza (a hit). Service tonight was excellent in general; we were well attended to and weren't left in need of anything. After tonight and a prior visit in the summer, we can safely say that BEVO is not all about location or trendiness. It is actually a decent "food" destination.

Le Bureau Bar Tapas
Griffintown

Tonight we were invited to attend the opening/media launch of Le Bureau Bar Tapas. The 19th-century, ex-antique shop was redone with an eye for detail and an emphasis on recycling. Featured are several decor objects from that period, such as old desk lamps and brass fire extinguishers. The evening started out quietly for the media launch at 5PM but by 7PM, it got very busy as endless groups of yuppies kept flowing in for drinks at the bar or tapas and wine at the tables. The menu consists of a list of affordable, (mostly) Mediterranean-influenced tapas priced between $4 and $6. For drinks, you have the choice of an imported wine or one of twelve beers on tap. Le Bureau will not have any trouble filling its tables with the thousands of condo-dwellers moving in nearby over the next few years. Also, their budget-friendly tapas concept is unique in this part of the city, and is certain to attract young professionals working downtown for 5-à-7s and possibly more.

We hadn't been to Andalos since they moved into their newly-constructed digs right down the street from their old location. They did an amazing job with the new layout. The massive, warehouse-like space is neatly divided into several sections: shelved products, prepared meals, a pizza/bakery counter and a manakish counter. We went with the Oeuf patate man'ouché (so-so) and the Kafta fromage man'ouché (a hit). We love Andalos on the weekends in the daytime. It's a great place to take your kids, have a bite, and do your groceries all at once.

Ferreira Café

For Montreal's first ever restaurant week, where 100+ participating restaurants offer 3-course menus for either $19, $29 or $39, we wanted to go to a familiar place that's usually unaffordable. The choice of Ferreira Café was easy: when else can you sample a full dinner for $39 before 10PM at this bastion of Portuguese gastronomy? Ferreira boasts an intimate and upscale interior with its long bar, signature wall of broken, colorful dishes and open-concept kitchen on the mezzanine level. The place is perfectly suited for a special occasion or for plain people-watching. The menu revolves around Portuguese seafood dishes; some are classics while others are updated versions. It also includes some meat dishes and surf & turf combos. For TASTE MTL, we had a choice of two starters, two mains and one dessert, all of which we sampled. The beautiful hostess warmly greeted us and showed us to our table, and our attractive waitress was very friendly and attentive. The food came in a timely manner and was at the right temperature. Really can't say much here, we wish all restaurants have service like this. We love Ferreira for everything it offers: the consistently good food, the ambiance, the great service… Whether it's for a special occasion, to show off to out-of-towners, or a pricey lunch, you won't be disappointed here. At $39, the TASTE MTL menu did a good job of showcasing this seafood haven's capabilities at a budget-friendly price.

Wanting to try something new and different for dinner, we headed out for Imadake, Westmount's happening Japanese pub/izakaya. Imadake's layout consists of a painted Japanese "pop art" mural featuring mushrooms, samurais and other quirky characters on one end, and an open kitchen on the other (which was emitting a rather objectionable frying oil odor, unfortunately). In between the two are various seating arrangements such as raised communal tables, booths and smaller tables. The menu is roughly divided into five sections: starters, salads, grilled & fried dishes, noodles & rice, as well as a long saké list. We decided to sample at least one item from each section. We also started our dinner with a round of saké bombs. Other than the saké, the other bomb that was dropped on us tonight involved the timing of the service. We pretty much received all of our food at once. By the time we were done with our cold appetizers, our "hot" mains were all but room temperature. Imadake is a good place to gather around a bottle of saké and cheer the night away with friends. They also serve simple dishes that, while not the most sophisticated, will keep you going during your drinking bonanza. We liked the quirky décor and the rowdy crowd/staff, but the strong smell and timing mishap with the service left a sour note in our dinner.

Vallier Bistro Montréalais

Service

Since winter is slowly creeping in with its chill, we wanted to go somewhere that doesn't have long line-ups for brunch. Vallier fit the order since they have a huge space and, if you need to wait, it'll be inside. With its wood clad walls and brick exposed side, Vallier mimics a huge wood cabin. The large wooden columns and beams break up the spacious dining room. The place is usually full for brunch so it does get a little loud. The brunch menu is not very creative and consists of staple items such as omelettes, Benedicts, and waffles. You'll also find a couple of heavier dishes like a burger and a steak. They offer a bottomless filter coffee but other coffees are charged by the cup. The service at Vallier is usually very warm and attentive. Recently, however, this has not been the case. Today it was average at best. Even though we received a warm welcome and got our coffees quickly, it went downhill from there. My coffee was cold and had spills all over the saucer. I had to ask for refills which took a while to get there, and no one really checked to see how our meal was going. Even though the food at Vallier is not exceptional, it was one of those warm no-fuss go-to places. We've been here a lot of times over the years, and there's a definite downtrend overall. Food is becoming increasingly spotty, lesser portions, and service level decreasing to a point that doesn't justify the price point or type of establishment they portray.

Today we wanted to grab a quick lunch somewhere midway between downtown and the West Island, for logistical reasons, so we decided to pay a visit to Dunn's Famous deli on Decarie. One of us was also using public transit, so the fact that this longstanding mecca of smoked meat is right in front of Namur metro station on a rainy day helped. The place was certainly busy for lunch. You can expect to wait a couple minutes before being seated. You can also expect crutches, wheelchairs and portly fellows, as the crowd was certainly on the "old" side. The long menu contains an expected assortment of deli favorites, such as smoked meat sandwiches, club sandwiches, burgers and many others. We liked the free refill policy on soda, which was actually surprisingly good for fountain soda. The food at Dunn's is pretty basic and classic; no bells and no whistles. That's probably why the name has been around for almost a century now; they know what they're doing and they don't need to make any changes. Let's just call it a neighborhood restaurant, good for the locals, or for a very late-night dinner (this location is open 24/7).

Tonight we decided to venture outside of our downtown/Old Montreal comfort area and head out to chef Martin Juneau's latest venture, Pastaga, which opened last year on a (previously) forgotten stretch of Saint Laurent in Rosemont/La Petite Patrie. Pastaga's interior is very reminiscent of a wine bar, especially with its unusual L-shaped tables. The menu, which is heavy on local ingredients, has no starters or main dishes. It rather contains a single size of moderately-priced dishes, so one can build their own meal (a great idea for sharing). We were very pleased with the service tonight. It was on the warm and casual side (our waiter was wearing a Cleveland Indians baseball cap), not what you normally expect at a place serving food of this caliber, let alone French food. With its cozy decor, friendly service and great food, Pastaga is a nice place for a fine dining experience or to enjoy a few glasses of wine from their natural wine list.
