Mythos Ouzeri Estiatorio
Mile-End
Service

3.5

Mythos is a staple for the Montreal Greek community for good food and a place to come together and party into the night - about half way up Parc avenue in the center of Mile end. On this hot summer evening we were able to get a table right on the sidewalk just off the terrasse which was awarded to us by the godfather like caracter sitting solo at a table almost on Parc ave. Regulars seemed to know and respect the man, wait staff got their direction from him. Presented with pages of a multitude of greek wine options we settled for a litre of the house wine - which turned out to be italian - but good none-the-less. As a group we shared a couple of aps. We started with the saganaki was surprisingly mediocre. To me, the best varieties of this fried greek cheese has a gooey warm interior that pulls a little bit like pizza mozerella - with a nice crust on the outside. This Saganaki was lukewarm and slightly spongy - not horrible but not near the best i've had. Next we shared the Kolokythakia Tiganita which are batter covered, deep fried chip like slices of zucchini and eggplant served with a side of tatziki which was enjoyed all around. We couldnt seem to eat the chips any faster and the tatziki was among the best i've ever tried - thick as it should be, with a good bite and a surpring addition of dill -which did it wonders. As mains we tried grilled octopus, mousaka, grilled chicken and grilled salmon - all of which were thoroughly enjoyed. Many plates were accompanied by roasted greek potatos - not roasted in a conventional way i'm used to but with a odd red saucy coating- not crispy - which were OK but not great. Several meals also came with 'horta' which we were told was from the dandelion family - presented as a lukewarm green, almost sludge-like accompanyment. Traditional maybe but i left most of it on my plate - others agreed. Ordered an extra plate of the awesome tatziki which everyone heaped all over their mains. Overall good food and solid service by large team that was constantly moving -water glasses were constantly being filled and we were provided with a large basket of slightly old break to use as a vehicle for the remainder of the taziki. Recommended.

La Taverne Monkland (Monkland Tavern)

We decided to revisit this Monkland street staple after at least 10 years since our last visit. Since this is a popular joint and they dont take reservations we fully expected to wait at least 1/2 hour before being seeting but we were pleasantly surprised to get a seat immediately, right against the open garage door looking out over the terrasse and street. The long wine list had few by the glass selections which were all pretty expensive (all $10 or more) - although the serving was goenerous and the glasses were proper which made up for the price (nothing worse than dinky glasses or small servings). We both chose from the table d'hote and started with the green salad. Fresh, cruchy lettuce sprinkled with sunflower seeds and dressed with a light and sweet vinigrette - pleasant. For the main my dining partner had the duck garnished with cherries - good reviews from her but I found the duck a little tough. I had the carbonara with chicken and asparagus. Pasta was perfectly aldente and sauce was lightly creamy rather than overbearingly rich - pretty good. On the negative side, main took too long (at least 30 mins after salad) and no quality check. Overall experience agreeable.

I've heard great reviews of this newer restaurant in Griffentown but have never eated in this part of town. Seems oddly placed on St Jacques close to Lucien L'allier but once inside this quaint and comfy resto it's almost like you are transported back a couple of decades. Decor seems like a mix with 70ies style light fixtures and walls with a modern bar. Started with a green salad which was easily shared due to it's behemoth size but wasnt too filling, nice light salad with a few veggies and fresh parmasan (or romano?). Tried two pasta plates as seconds - rabbit parpedelle with peas was given top marks by all. Pork Chop with brussel sprouts as a main was very flavorful and well cooked. Overall very good experience, solid service and warm inviting atomsphere. Only complaint is that the wine list was a little pricy. Would go back.

Not really 'Greek' food. This is classic Montreal fast food souvlaki and very good - it's won best Souvlaki in the city many times. Excellent souvlaki pitas with slice of cucumber and very good tzatziki (ONLY suggested improvement would be thicker pita). Everyone likes the dollar fries. Feta with garlic bread is very good. 'Greek' salad lacks flavour but is always fresh. Order at counter and sit in dining room or take out (sit in and eat fresh is always best). Extremely fast service. Great for families and kids. Not expensive. 2 can eat like kings for $20. No liquor licence. Doesn't try to be something it's not. High marks.

Food was excellent. Tzatziki app was good - good garlic flavor, thick as it should be (runny tzatziki should be against the law). Feta chicken and Salmon dishes very tasty. Problem for be was the service - not horrible but i expected better. Friendly - Yes. First round of drinks - full wine glass and full G&T. Second round came with both glasses barely 3/4 of the original size - was it intentional? Waiter attempted to remove a wine glass when there was a little left - HUGE no-no (especially on a $10 glass) - like seriously, ask 'May I take your glass?". NO quality check - thats a BIG no-no for me at a good restaurant. Signed bill was taken before we left the table - strike three for service. Felt rushed. Would go back for food but hopefully different server.
